What is the Beyond School Programme?

Beyond School is a brand new educational and enrichment programme developed by Kingston University to support Kingston Academy students to improve their attitudes to learning and be better prepared and equipped to achieve their GCSE’s qualifications. We are currently looking for Kingston University students to support the programme by becoming tutors and role models for the pupils. This is a brilliant local opportunity to gain valuable and transferable skills, while also making a real difference in your community.

Placement

Kingston Academy is a new outstanding secondary school located in North Kingston, which is only a 10 minute walk from Kingston station so ideal for those looking for opporunities close to campus. The school was set up by the Kingston Educational Trust, a partnership between Kingston University, Kingston College and Royal Borough of Kingston.

Your role as a tutor

You will work closely with a group of year 10 students who have been selected to take part in this programme and you will support them in their academics, personal development and career planning. You will tutor the pupils in Math, English or Science (you choose!) and you will be supported by a member of Kingston University staff to deliver creative, innovate and interactive sessions on a one to one and group bases.

Availability and Commitment

The sessions run on a fortnightly basis from 13:55pm - 15:45pm. All tutors will need to be available and committed to every session to ensure pupil engagement is sustained (advanced notice must be made as soon as possible to staff members if unable to attend a session). All sessions will take place in University term times and all travel expenses will be reimbursed. A member of University staff will be present during every session and will provide on going support and guidance.

Skills and employability

Communication, empathy, dedication, safeguarding, leadership, working with children with complex needs, pastoral support of children, flexibility, time management and school liaison are all skills you will gain by taking part in the Beyond School Programme. This volunteering opportunity is excellent for anyone who wants experience working with young people, or is exploring a career in education/youth work.

Training and support

All of our Programmes are supported by our staff. Through this programme you will be supported by Kingston Hub Programme Manager (Clara Johnston) and Kingston University Education Liasion Officer (Robert Temowo). Clara and Robert will be leading on your selection workshop, initial training and additional training provision (behaviour management, routes into education etc) throughout your placement, as well as any issues that may have occured. At the end of each session every volunteer will be required to provide staff members with feedback of each session (feedback forms will be provided), which will be used for assessment and content development purposes.

Volunteering with Beyond School won't cost you

We reimburse all Kingston Hub volunteers' travel expenses throughout the project.
